Agree on the kind of evening first
A tasting date can mean a structured comparison or simply a bottle with more attention than usual. Ask which sounds enjoyable before arranging the table. If one person wants an educational session and the other wants an easy dinner, a long video or detailed score sheet may miss the point. Make a shared choice about the format, including whether wine is something both people want that evening.
Keep the setup modest
Use glasses you already have, clear a comfortable space, and keep water within reach. Choose food you can prepare without spending the whole evening away from the table. A small written prompt can be enough: what do you notice first, which glass do you prefer, and would you choose it with dinner? There is no need to reproduce a professional tasting room or buy equipment before you know whether you enjoy the ritual.
Compare before reading the description
Give each person time to form an impression before opening the notes. Use everyday language and let preferences differ. Asking what makes a wine appealing is more interesting than trying to establish whose description is correct. If you are following a recording, pause whenever conversation takes over. The recording is there to support the evening, not to require everyone to finish on the host’s schedule.
Plan what happens after the first pour
Opening a bottle does not create an obligation to finish it. Decide what you want to taste, keep pours modest, and leave room to stop. Save the label details and one observation you would like to revisit. That simple record can become the starting point for another evening without requiring a full ranking of the collection.
