A live event offers a shared time. A recording offers control over pace. Ask what access and interaction actually include.
What a scheduled session adds
A live tasting gives you a reason to put an evening in the calendar. Hearing other participants’ questions may introduce ideas you would not have considered alone. But live does not automatically mean interactive: some sessions are presentations with limited questions. Before choosing on that basis, check the session format, expected group size, host, and whether participation is by microphone, chat, or a moderated question period.
What a recording makes easier
A recording can fit around dinner, travel, and different time zones. You can pause to compare a glass, return to a section, or explore another bottle on a later evening. That flexibility is useful only if you actually retain access long enough. Ask whether the recording is downloadable, available for a limited period, or tied to an active subscription. Do not assume the word recording means permanent ownership.
Match the wines to the session
Before a tasting date, make sure the intended wines are available and understand whether the host expects a specific flight. A recorded guide to an earlier vintage may still offer context, but it is different from guidance tailored to the exact bottles you received. Likewise, tasting samples and full bottles suit different plans. Choose using your own calendar
If you regularly miss scheduled online events, access to a recording may matter more than a live invitation. If you enjoy asking questions in real time, confirm that opportunity rather than accepting a general claim of community. A useful test is whether you can describe when and how you would use the first session before paying for a year of them.
