Agree on the kind of date you want
A quiet dinner for two and a social tasting can both make good evenings, but they serve different moods. At a hosted table, the wines and other guests are part of the experience. If you want uninterrupted private conversation, a group format may feel more structured than you intended.
Talk about the format before choosing it. One person may enjoy listening to the host while another wants a relaxed meal with wine in the background. A brief conversation about expectations is more useful than surprising someone with a recurring commitment.
Read the food and timing details
Food pairings do not necessarily mean a full dinner. Check what is included, when the event begins and ends, and whether you should make separate meal plans. Confirm dietary requirements with the organizer instead of assuming that a venue’s ordinary menu applies to the event.
Look at the travel time between work, home, and the venue. A tasting with a shared start time is less flexible than dropping into a restaurant. If either person is likely to arrive late, ask whether the format can accommodate that before booking.
- Are the pairings a meal or tasting portions?
- Is there a fixed start time?
- Are two admissions or two memberships required?
Keep the tasting playful
Choose one question to revisit across the flight: which glass would you order again, which surprised you most, or which would you pair with a favorite meal? You do not have to agree. A difference in preferences can make the conversation more interesting than selecting a joint winner.
If you want to remember the wines later, record the exact names. A shared list of discoveries can become useful the next time you order at a restaurant, even if neither person writes a formal tasting note.
Distinguish a date from a subscription
One enjoyable night is not the same decision as a quarterly membership. The Society is priced per person: $495 each quarter, or $990 for two memberships. There is no included plus-one or advertised couple rate. Check both calendars and the confirmed program before either person subscribes.
